Chapter 2 Exploring and Focusing, another straight forward
named chapter, does what it says it does, it helps you explore your topic and
focus in on it. Though unlike chapter one, it has substantially more content
for me to read. And while some of it I already know how to do, like get ideas
from books, articles etc, I did not know that skimming was a god thing to do
when looking into our sources. This will save me lots of time, but I do not see
how it will help me focus my idea. I guess it must be used in moderation and
not something I should rely on alone, it should also be noted that this is an
organization technique and not a focus technique. I guess I just answered my
own question. In the focus part of the chapter I found the section on
identifying conversation was the most helpful. I had not heard of this idea
before, and the chapter covers it nicely. It taught me that I should look for
the connection in all of the material I gather for my paper, basically it says
to get the common idea out of what I am using to see if it is relevant to what I
am writing. It also taught me to look for arguments that I could use as counter
evidence for my paper, as well as themes. So I am happy that I read through
this chapter, although there was some skimming as well.
